Budget Home Theater
The various parts of audio systems are the key to the value and performance of a home theater system. Fortunately, for the online shopper, there a variety of systems available in all price ranges. Many now come packaged as home theater in a box systems and there are quite a few great budget choices available. The best part of the box systems is that they eliminate the need for the first-time home theater buyer to have to try to put a system together by themselves.
A very inexpensive system that is worthy of consideration is the Onkyo SKS-HT870. All of the speakers and an AV receiver come in this set. Its best feature is the great sound for an inexpensive price tag. Some reviewers have commented that this package has a boxy look, sort of a Seventies home stereo appearance. However, when the cost is less than 500 bucks, this may not be a big deal and retro is hip these days.
The system has two thin tower speakers, four surround speakers, a subwoofer and a center channel speaker. The eight speakers have fiberboard cabinets with a wood-grain black finish, reinforcing the 70’s look. The speaker covers are black cloth and they are not removable. The two tower speakers and center speak have glossy black panels on the top and sides. The SKS-HT870 sounds great, whether picking up the audio from a DVD or Blu-ray or playing a favorite CD. Timbre is even throughout all of the speakers and the subwoofer is a perfect complement to these speakers. Overall, this budget system’s performance far exceeds its price tag, making it an excellent choice for the first time buyer.
Another great option in the inexpensive box home theatre system area is the Energy Take Classic 5.1 Home Theater System. This company is known for making great small speakers and this holds true in this home theatre system. At a retail price of about $600, it is a little more expensive than the Onkyo system, but not by much. What is even more interesting is that this system is an upgraded version of the original Take 5 system and actually sells for about $200 less than the first system did over 10 years ago.
Take Classic’s speakers and subwoofer have a black laminate finish, though obviously not high-end solid cabinetry. The best feature about this system is its big sound and great balance due to the classic pairing of the satellite speakers with the subwoofer. When watching Blu-rays or DVD’s, the dialogue is sharp and clear, and background sounds are also clearly audible, but not overdone. With CD’s, the subwoofer adds definition to the layers of sound and the speakers all work well together.
It is clear that the parts of audio systems must all mesh together seamlessly to provide a true home theatre experience. Both of these budget-in-a-box systems provide extraordinary sound and clarity with components that are made to perform together. With so many systems retailing for $1000 and up, the budget conscious shopper cannot go wrong with either of these choices.
